In the Beginning

It all started with a group of young guys who wanted to go fast. Most of them were high school kids and veterans just returning from World War II. They didn't have much money, but they had determination and skill. They stripped or cut off all of the parts of their cars and bikes that didn't make them go, stop or turn. They then upped the power of their engines using whatever means were available. At that time, there was very little in the way of mass-produced speed equipment and most hot rods and custom bikes were true one-off works of individual ingenuity and self expression. No two were alike. It is also worth noting that anything with wheels and an engine was an acceptable choice for a hot rod or a custom bike, as long as it could perform at the dry lakes, salt flats, dirt track, drag strip or the stop light.
Where it all went wrong

Everything changed when cars and bikes became status symbols. In the hot rod world bragging rights went to the most expensive car, rather than the fastest. In fact, you hardly hear performance mentioned at all any more. It's all about the price tag. Whoever has the fattest wallet wins. It is not at all uncommon to hear that someone has spent six figures on a car and doesn't even drive it because it's "too valuable as an investment." At the same time, this attitude drove the price of hot rods far out of the budget of the average, blue-collar working person. Instead of being the average guy's passion, it became the rich man's trinket.
It was even worse in the bike world. Suddenly, in order to be a biker, you had to ride a certain kind of bike, so that you could be accepted and fit in as an individual....just like everyone else.
